Dentures are artificial replacement teeth and gums that allow wearers to eat, smile, and enjoy life. They are one of the most widely-used prosthetic devices. At one time, dentures were uncomfortable and unsightly—with the earliest versions dating back to the Etruscans in 700 B.C. Etruscan dentures, crafted from animal ivory or human teeth, were the models of their time. But they were a far cry from today’s dentures.

What are Dentures?

Modern dentures are triumphs of design and engineering—meaning they combine both form and function. Well designed and fitted dentures are indistinguishable from natural teeth. They are also certainly nothing to fear and are life-enhancing for people who have missing teeth.

At Highland Woods Dentistry in London, we treat denture wearers every day. Dentures are a form of replacement teeth that can be complete or partial. Complete, or full dentures are used when most or all natural teeth are missing. They are held in place by suction and are removable. Partial dentures are removable prostheses that are made up of one of several artificial teeth. They are attached by clasps onto natural teeth.

Proper Denture Care

Whether complete or partial, denture technology is constantly improving. Many denture wearers find dentures take a bit of time to get used to—both in mouth feel and in regimen or care. At Highland Woods Dentistry, we stress a regimen of care that includes cleaning every day. If not cleaned, like natural teeth, plaque and tartar can build up on dentures, causing stains, gum problems, and bad breath. Nobody wants bad breath if they can prevent it!

We recommend using a tooth or denture brush and a denture cleanser to clean dentures at least once a day. Denture wearers should gently brush the entire surface of their dentures, including areas where bacteria might grow. After cleansing, the dentures should be rinsed well before they are stored.

Living with Dentures in London, ON

Many patients ask us if they should floss if they have dentures. Highland Woods Dentistry recommends flossing your natural teeth, if you have partials, and massage your gums while your dentures are removed. You can do this with a soft toothbrush or a clean, damp cloth. Store your dentures while not wearing them in your denture case. Use warm water to ensure they don’t dry out or warp. While they are out, examine them for cracks. Your dentures should feel comfortable when fitted. Denture wearers should see their dentist at least once a year, and more often if they slip. The architecture of our mouths change over time, so it is important to have your mouth and dentures examined by your dentist.
